Austin Ruiz, O.D.

Dr. Austin Ruiz is a Killeen native and graduated from Killeen High School in 1975. After high school, he studied at the University of Houston in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He received his optometry degree from University of Houston College of Optometry in 1981. He received extensive pathology training on the Sioux Indian Reservations of Standing Rock and Eagle Butte in North and South Dakota. Dr. Ruiz received his Fellowship in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development in November in 1989. The Fellowship was the culmination of three years of work and study in the areas of strabismus, amblyopia, and visually related learning disorders. At that time, Dr. Ruiz was only one of nine doctors in the State of Texas to have successfully taken and passed the written, oral and case studies examination required for Fellowship. Dr. Ruiz is adept in the examination and treatment of patients requiring special visual correction with custom fitted contact lenses. He is certified as an Optometric Glaucoma Specialist by the Texas Optometry Board. He is also specially trained in the examination of infants and children.

Dr. Ruiz is a member of the Killeen Noon Lions Club, Heart of Texas Optometric Society, Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. He is a Fellow Emeritus of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, a Director of the Central Texas Workforce Commission and a Director of the Brazos River Authority.

Dr. Ruiz is married to his high school sweetheart, Kathy Safady Ruiz, and they have 5 children and 12 grandchildren. He enjoys reading, spending time with his family and dogs, as well as traveling.
